A First on June 1st: Heading Wheat

From the road the field had a spiked look.
It caused Farmer Fred to stop at the first approach to the field.
This is the first time that we have found heads of wheat on the first of June. We enjoyed a mild Winter and an early Spring. The Winter Wheat established early this year.
A beautiful sight, we had to stop and dream for a minute about an early and bountiful harvest.
There are signs of leaf disease in the field. It will probably require a pass of fungicide.
The ground stays cool and damp during the morning and the carpet of wheat is thick. We have had several cloudy days which enhance the opportunity for disease. However, the recent cold snap has reduced the insect population.
The heads are not impressive in their size, but it is too early to judge the true potential of this crop
Everything looks great considering it is the first of June.
I think we will count that as a smile in GriggsDakota.
