Remove packaging and plastic wrappers from your candy canes and place them into a large zip top plastic bag. As you close it, remove as much air as possible. Fold the bag in half so that you have three layers of plastic under the peppermint sticks.
Use a rubber mallet to pound out the candy. This is not carpentry, so watch it. If you don't have a rubber mallet, place a sturdy plastic cutting board under the bag and gently pound with the side of a regular hammer. Be very careful not to chip your countertop.
