So when we see Farmer Fred out in the field, what is he looking for?
If it is August, he is looking for ripened wheat.
Farmer Fred pulls off a wheat head randomly.
He then rolls the head to separate the kernels from the husks.
After looking over the kernels,
He puts a few in his mouth one at a time to check the crunch.
If the kernels are doughy, there is no chance that the wheat is ripe enough to harvest.
The harder and crunchier the kernels, the drier the wheat, which is what we need before we can combine.
If the rain misses us, we might be out here with a combine in a day or two.
